How to Connect Reddit to Codex via MCP

Give Codex real Reddit search access in two commands -- one browser sign-in, no key to copy, and it works across the CLI, IDE extension, and desktop app.

Connect Reddit to Codex in two commands: add ThreadSnoop's remote MCP server, then sign in once through your browser. Codex stores MCP servers in ~/.codex/config.toml, which the CLI, the IDE extension, and the desktop app all share — so setting it up once covers every place you use Codex.

1. Add the server

terminal
codex mcp add threadsnoop --url https://api.threadsnoop.com/mcp

That writes a [mcp_servers.threadsnoop] entry to your config. No API key needed yet — the next step creates one for you.

2. Sign in

terminal
codex mcp login threadsnoop

Codex registers itself with ThreadSnoop automatically and opens a browser tab. Log in (or sign up free — 100 free Reddit searches, no card) and click Allow on the consent screen. Codex gets its own key, scoped to your account, and you never copy or paste a secret.

Prefer the IDE extension?

Open the gear menu → MCP servers → Add server, name it threadsnoop, choose Streamable HTTP, and enter https://api.threadsnoop.com/mcp. Save, restart the extension, and click Authenticate when it asks you to sign in. Same consent screen, same result.

Prefer an API key instead of OAuth?

If you'd rather manage the key yourself — on a headless box, say, where a browser sign-in isn't practical — create one on your developer dashboard, export it, and point Codex at the environment variable instead of signing in:

~/.codex/config.toml
[mcp_servers.threadsnoop]
url = "https://api.threadsnoop.com/mcp"
env_http_headers = { "x-api-key" = "THREADSNOOP_API_KEY" }

The value on the right is the name of the environment variable, not the key itself, so the secret never lands in your config file.

3. Verify it's actually working

Run codex mcp list (or /mcp inside the TUI) to confirm the server is listed, then ask Codex:

Check my ThreadSnoop credits

That calls the free check_credits tool — a real balance coming back confirms the whole chain. From there, a real prompt like search r/webdev for people complaining about deploy times this week returns real posts, billed from your 100 free reads.

If you also use Claude or Cursor, the same server works there too — see every way to connect an AI agent to Reddit. Once you're connected, here's how to get the most out of the MCP tools.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an API key before connecting Codex?

No. codex mcp login opens a browser sign-in, Codex registers itself automatically, and it gets its own key scoped to your account. If you'd rather manage a key yourself, point env_http_headers at an environment variable holding it.

Does this work in the Codex IDE extension too?

Yes. The CLI, IDE extension, and desktop app share ~/.codex/config.toml, so a server added in one shows up in all of them. In the extension: gear menu -> MCP servers -> Add server -> Streamable HTTP.

How do I check it's connected?

Run codex mcp list (or /mcp in the TUI), then ask Codex to check your ThreadSnoop credits. That tool is free and confirms the whole chain end to end.
