Codex can't reliably read Reddit because Reddit blocks anonymous, automated requests, and a coding agent fetching a URL is exactly that. Ask Codex to pull a Reddit thread and you'll usually get a blocked request, a 403, or a page missing most of its content. The fix is to give Codex a real Reddit API as an MCP server — two commands, covered below.
Why does Reddit block Codex?
Reddit locked down free programmatic access in 2023 and has tightened it since. Self-service registration for its own free API tier reportedly closed in late 2025, so new apps wait on a manual review. And the trick scripts relied on for years — adding .json to a Reddit URL — was shut off on 2026-05-30; unauthenticated requests now return a flat 403 (full story).
So when Codex writes curl https://www.reddit.com/r/.../.json or a quick requests.get script, it's using a path that no longer exists. That isn't a Codex bug. Any agent — or any script you write yourself — hits the same wall.
Doesn't OpenAI have a deal with Reddit?
OpenAI announced a content partnership with Reddit in 2024. But a licensing deal between two companies isn't an API your agent can call from your terminal. It doesn't give Codex a sanctioned way to search a subreddit or pull a comment tree on demand, inside your own session.
How do I give Codex Reddit access?
Add ThreadSnoop's remote MCP server, then sign in once:
codex mcp add threadsnoop --url https://api.threadsnoop.com/mcp
codex mcp login threadsnoopThe second command opens your browser. Log in or sign up (100 free Reddit searches, no card), click Allow, and you're connected — no key to copy. Codex shares one config across the CLI, the IDE extension, and the desktop app, so this covers all three. The full walkthrough, including the IDE menu path and an API-key option for headless machines, is in connecting Reddit to Codex.
What can Codex do with Reddit once it's connected?
Search r/node for posts about memory leaks in the last month and group them by cause— research before you debug.Write a script that pulls new r/selfhosted posts mentioning backups every morning— Codex can build against the same API with a key, using the REST endpoints and OpenAPI spec.Get the full comment tree for this thread— every nested reply, not just the top-level comments.
Everything is read-only. ThreadSnoop never posts, votes, or messages on your behalf.
The same server works with Claude and Cursor too.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Codex get a 403 from Reddit?
Reddit deprecated unauthenticated .json access on 2026-05-30, so the curl or requests call Codex usually writes now returns a flat 403. Free programmatic access had already been locked down since 2023.
Doesn't OpenAI have a partnership with Reddit?
OpenAI announced a content partnership with Reddit in 2024, but that's a deal between two companies, not an API your agent can call from your terminal to search a subreddit on demand.
How do I connect Codex to Reddit?
Run codex mcp add threadsnoop --url https://api.threadsnoop.com/mcp, then codex mcp login threadsnoop and approve the browser sign-in.
